MUGWORT | Essential Oil
Pure Artemisia vulgaris essential oil.
Mugwort, or Artemisia vulgaris, is a perennial herb that originated in Eastern Europe and Western Asia and grows wildly and abundantly all over temperate and cold-temperate zones of the world. It is a common weed in Central and Southeastern Europe, India, China, Japan. The French oil is known as essence d’Armoise.
In the European Middle Ages, mugwort was used as a magical protective herb to guard against disease and misfortune. It was also used to repel insects, particularly moths, from gardens. It is associated with John the Baptist and has been used from ancient times as a remedy against fatigue and to protect travelers against evil spirits and wild animals. It is also associated with the goddess Venus/Aphrodite, and used to arouse sexual desire.
The oil has a powerful, fresh camphoraceous odour, somewhat green and bittersweet, with a cedar leaf-like top note, a sage-rosemary-like body note, and liquorice overtones. It has a pleasant, sweet-herbaceous and tea-like dry out. The flavour is warm, almost pungent, but also bittersweet. It adds freshness and warmth to lavender-colognes, chypres, fougères, and pine fragrances.
It is traditionally used to induce lucid dreaming, remove warts and internal parasites, and in massage oils for aching joints and muscles.
